Summer in Bodrum

Summer in Bodrum attracts millions of visitors every year. It is the high season when the beaches in Bodrum are full all day and entertainment venues are open around the clock. The uninterrupted sun and warm turquoise waters are just what people are looking for after a hard-working year.

In summers, lonely clouds can sometimes show up in the middle of a hot day. It rarely rains and when it does, it usually does not take long enough to ruin the lazy time on the beach.

I have seen rain only twice during the summer in Bodrum. I still remember one of them as it happened yesterday. It was weird!

I always think that there is nothing more refreshing than an ice-cold beer on a vacation when it is hot. It was a hot and sunny afternoon when I and my friends were enjoying our drinks at a café on the Bars Street in Bodrum town centre.

In the blink of an eye, the sky was covered with the darkest clouds I had ever seen. They just appeared from out of nowhere. When a sudden, heavy rain started, we grabbed our drinks and rushed to the indoor area of the café. Other customers had also escaped from the rain and there were no seats available inside.

We asked for the check and paid the bill. It took only 3 or 4 minutes. When we went out, there were no sign of those black clouds and rain in the sky, but a bright sun in the blue sky. If the tables of the café and the streets were still not dripping wet, I would never believe what I had just witnessed.

Summer Tips

Too much of anything is never good and so is the exposure to the UV lights of the sun for a long time. It can be unnecessarily hot during the summer in Bodrum. When visiting the Bodrum State Hospital, I was told that the heat stroke is the number one complaint they receive in the summer days.

Avoid spending too much time under the sun, especially in excessive temperatures. Wear a hat, a light-coloured t-shirt, and a short to reflect the sunlight. Do not forget to wear sunglasses as well.

Sunscreens are your friends, and they help you to protect yourself by blocking harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV) from being absorbed by the skin.

Keep in mind that the sunlight and the UV lights are reflected from each and every surface they touch. Even if you are sitting in the shadow of an umbrella or a tree, you can still be exposed to UV lights, being reflected from the sands in the beach or the water surface. So, do not goof off on using sunscreen all the time. If you do not have any in your luggage, you can find sunscreens at markets, cosmetics shops, and pharmacies in Bodrum.

Drink lots of liquids. Stay hydrated, stay healthy…

There are lots of nature sports groups in Bodrum and I am a member of a few of them. We stop our activities during the summer and limit our activities to boat trips, dinners and breakfasts from June to August because of the excessive temperatures.

Think twice before going for compelling activities like long walks and hikes. Please remember; when the temperature is 30°C or more in summer in Bodrum, taking long walks in the nature or spending hours in historical sites may cause serious damage to your health.
